IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1)

IGF (Insulin-like growth factor) is a kind of growth hormone which regulates signaling systems for cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival. These growth factors including autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine activities and are expressed in a variety of organs and cell types. IGFs are classified into two types: type I (IGF-I) and type II (IGF-II), which work by binding to their respective membrane receptors: IGF-I R and IGF-II R.

IGF which is also called somatomedin C, is a protein that is encoded by the IGF1 gene in humans. It is made up of 70 amino acids linked together.  It is also used for the treatment of the growth failure in children.

IGF-1 is produced in several tissues as a result of GH in the blood. Certain ailments and diseases, such as pituitary tumors, might cause your body to produce excessive amounts of GH. Since IGF-1 levels are related to GH levels, IGF test is used for the measurement of the level of IGF-1 in your blood.
